Strategy & Tactics of Reserach in Uesu Laboratory

Responses of materials to external fields are termed “susceptibility” which are forthright material constants and the most important subject in various fields of physics extending over material physics, soft matter physics and biophysics. So far the susceptibility has been related to atomic fluctuations in the scheme of the linear-response theory. However if materials have structural hierarchy, this scheme is not always so effective, but it could be more effective to relate the response with fluctuations of higher order structures in meso-scopic scale. These examples have been recently found in several materials. The colossal piezoelectric and dielectric responses in relaxors and quantum paraelectrics are examples.

We investigate these hetero-structural fluctuations of dielectrics, ferroelectrics and multiferroic materials to understand the essential mechanism of the responses of these materials. For this purpose, we fabricate artificial hetero-structures in form of thin films by using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method and investigate various structural, physical and optical properties. In particular, we have developed the second-harmonic generation interference microscopy (SHGIM) that enables us to obtain 3D hetero-structures of the inside in non-destructive way.

The followings are the list of typical recent papers we published, some of them are performed with collaborations of foreign groups.
